about
The romance between Obits and La Castanya goes on. After visiting Spain repeteadly (four visits since 2010 organized by La Castanya) and welcoming a new drummer (Alexis Fleisig non the less, from Girls against Boys and Soulside) the New York four piece now delivers two new songs in a new 7 inch –the fourth of their career– that La Castanya will release worldwide.
If in their previous LPs –I Blame You (2009) and Moody, Standard and Poor (2011), both released by Sub Pop– they delivered a true feast of rock, garage and surf sounds, in these two new songs, “Refund”, written by Rick Froberg (Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu) and “Suez Canal”, written by Sohrab Habibion (Edsel), fortunately they don’t stay much away from what the bands’ fans expect to receive. Two compositions that can sound fierce or playful in hands of a quartet that have seen it all and that oozes Rock and honesty from every pore.
A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
hardcore punk, jazz, alien themes, kind of all my jams wrapped into a tight package. Intense, freaky, lean runtime but feels dense especially being sectioned into essentially 4 parts. Easily one of the best punk records of the decade so far. Also that drumming...holy shit alienasu
This Oakland group pulls no punches, serving up a hard-hitting punk album that recalls the blistering brilliance of Refused. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 8, 2020
